A “solemn appeal” to the Allied Powers in Germany to renounce their plans for extending clemency to imprisoned Nazi war criminals was issued here today by the French section of the World Jewish Congress.
The appeal was occasioned by the recent decision of the French High Commissioner in Germany to establish a French-German clemency commission to examine the cases of some 80 German war criminals held by the French occupation authorities. This action followed similar moves by the British and American High Commissioners.
“Such a policy of clemency can only serve as an encouragement for those for whom the defeat of Hitler has not meant the capitulation of Nazism,” the WJC appeal warned.
