A complaint charging The Mohawk, a hotel in Old Forge, N.Y., with “unlawful discriminatory practice” has been filed with the New York State Commission Against Discrimination by the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith.
The organization acted in behalf of Leonard Cohen of New York who accused The Mohawk of having rejected his request for an accommodation solely “because of my being a member of the Jewish faith. ” The ADL also presented evidence to the State Commission showing that in 1957 the owner and manager of The Mohawk signed a statement that the hotel restricts its patronage to Christians. This, the ADL pointed out, violates the New York State statute barring discrimination in places of public accommodation.
