Apartment houses in the very shadow of Temple Emanu-El discriminate against Jewish occupancy, Alfred R. Bachrach, president of the Reform temple, charged here last night. He voiced the allegation at a dinner at which he was awarded the annual Temple Men’s Club award. Rabbi Julius Mark, spiritual leader of Emanu-El, lauded Mr. Bachrach for his “selfless devotion” to Jewish communal life.
According to Mr. Bachrach, “there are clusters of multiple dwellings” within a few square miles of the Temple Emanu-El “in which people of the Jewish faith, regardless of their lowliness or loftiness, are not allowed to live. ” Later, in an interview, he said there has been at least one specific case of discrimination against a member of the congregation in a cooperative dwelling “a short distance from the Temple.”
