Elisee Tourian, Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem, died here yesterday at the age of 71. He was transferred from Constantinople to Palestine after the war and his election was confirmed by King George. Tourian was a great scholar in Greek, Hebrew, English, German, Latin and Syriac and it was he who introduced Hebrew into the curriculum of the Armenian Seminary.
The Patriarch devoted himself to educational work and as one of the guardians of the Holy Places did everything possible to secure the religious position of the Armenians. He was a member of Armenian delegation to the Peace Conference and was held in high esteem by all communities.
