For the first time in two decades, the Ashkenazi community in this city held elections for a nine-member body to administer the Ashkenazi synagogue and several welfare institutions.

The reason for the delay between elections was the Turkish law preventing communal elections without the express permission of the authorities, which had not been granted until recently. Only some 20 percent of the 2,500 Ashkenazi Jews in the city came to the polls.
