Bashar Assad was officially sworn in as Syria’s president, formally succeeding his late father, Hafez Assad. In an address before a special session of Parliament, Bashar, 34, reiterated his father’s call for a full Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights and called for wide-ranging economic and administrative reform.
