Without creating any of the stir which usually accompanies such undertakings, the work of establishing one hundred German Jewish refugee families in an agricultural colony near here is well under way.
About eighty kilometers from here, in the province of Gironde, a region that is beautiful, healthful and fertile, there is an old estate well equipped with buildings and out-houses but long-neglected. Here it is that the harassed and despairing wanderers have been given a haven. Some of them, indeed, have already gone there to live and are getting food off the land.
There has been talk of Jewish agricultural colonization in France for years. But it remained for the Exploitation Generals Agricole actually to begin the work of building up the first beautiful experiment. The work has nothing of the philanthropic about it, for in time each refugee family will be required to pay for the land it occupies.
The Exploitation Generale Agricole is headed by Professor Franz Oppenheimer, well known specialist of Jewish colonization problems. An agricultural school, where the refugees go through a preparatory course, has already been established.
