Brooklyn College and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem have joined hands to sponsor a Summer Institute allowing students the opportunity to earn up to eight credits studying in Israel it was announced by the Dean of Faculties. Harry Albaum. Scheduled for July and August, the Summer Institute is the first cooperative venture between The Hebrew University and a unit of The City University of New York. It will focus on “Land and Cultures of Israel,” a four credit, interdisciplinary social science course utilizing organized tours as an integrate part of its requirements. Besides this required course, students will have the chance to enroll in one or two of 13 courses being offered, in English, during the August summer session at The Hebrew University. Participation in the program is limited to Brooklyn College students and a small number of students from other City University institutions. “This Institute will add a new international dimension to the Judaic Studies Program,” said Professor Samuel Abrahamsen, director of the Summer Institute and faculty coordinator of the Judaic Studies Program at Brooklyn College. Students will also have a chance to analyze the history, geography, and cultural structure of Israel; study Israel’s various ethnic groups, minority problems, immigrants’ absorption and problems of acculturation; and analyze the socio-economic and educational systems in Israel. The role of the armed forces and the Hebrew language in unifying the young nation, the labor movements, and the kibbutzim will also be studied.
