The Representative Assembly elected by the Jews of Bulgaria has just concluded its session here. The elections were authorised and ratified by the Ministry of Public Worship. All Jews living in the country, without distinction of citizenship, were entitled to vote. 61 delegates were elected 35 General Zionists, 9 Revisionists, 4 Poale Zionists, and 13 non-Zionists. No anti-Zionists were elected.
Rabbi Dr. Asher Hanannel, the Rabbi of Sofia, opened the Conference, and M. Zwetinoff, the head of the Department of Public Worship, greeted the delegates on behalf of his Ministry.
Telegrams of greeting were sent by the Conference to King Boris, the President of the Bulgarian National Assembly, the Minister for Public Worship, the Palestine Yishub, and the Council for the Protection of Jewish Rights, which has its seat in Paris.
The chief question dealt with was the amendment of the Statutes, as follows:
This Organisation of Bulgarian Jewry embraces all Jewish Communities in Bulgaria as a part of the whole Jewish people, for the purpose of satisfying their religious and national cultural requirements. Within the limits of this purpose, and of the laws of the country, the Organisation is completely autonomous.
Every Jew must be a member of the Jewish Community in the locality where he is permanently resident. Every Jew in the country must belong to one of the Jewish Communities.
It was decided by the Conference that all subjects in the Jewish schools must be taught in Hebrew, except Bulgarian language, Bulgarian geography, and Bulgarian history, which must be taught in the Bulgarian language.
The Hebraisation of the Jewish schools is to proceed progressively until all the classes are fully Hebraised.
The budget of the Jewish Consistory includes appropriations for the Keren Hayesod, the Jewish National Fund, the B’rith Ivrith Olamit, the Heholuz, and for vocational training for the younger Jewish generation.
Among the resolutions adopted is one in support of the national endeavours of the Jews in Palestine, and urging an extensive Jewish colonisation activity in Palestine.
