Elizabeth Van Moorst, the Dutch spinster who five years ago went into hiding with her Jewish foster child Anneke Beekman in order to raise her as a Christian, surrendered today to Dutch authorities to face a six-month jail sentence for kidnaping.
The child was entrusted to the care of Miss Van Moorst just before her Jewish parents were taken by the Nazis to a death camp. The girl was taken abroad by her foster mother after a Dutch court ordered the child to be turned over to Jewish friends of her parents.
A number of papers here today urged the authorities to reject an appeal for a pardon filed on behalf of Miss Van Moorst. In an interview on a television program today, Miss Beekman, who is now 21, said she was “happily baptized” for nine years.
