The central consistory of French Jews, which pays for the upkeep of synagogues and other religious institutions, is in “very serious” financial difficulties, its president, Baron Alain de Rothschild, reported yesterday at the consistory’s annual assembly here. He told the 100 delegates that the consistory has nevertheless expanded its activities in cultural and religious fields over the past year and intends to continue to do so next year.
