Chaim Gross, the well-known American Jewish sculptor and painter, has been named the recipient of the Award of Merit Medal and a $1,000 prize for sculpture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He will receive the awards on May 22.
Born in Austria, Mr. Gross came to the United States in 1921, and studied at the Educational Alliance, the Beaux Arts Institute of Design and the Art Students League. He recently had a one-man show at the Whitney Museum here.
