The New York Board of Education was considering today a recommendation to have all the public schools in the city closed on the two days of Rosh Hashanah, next September 22 and 23, The recommendation was presented by Dr. John J. Theobald. Superintendent of Schools, who said that he also intends to consider Yom Kippur as an official school holiday.
Mr. Theobald said that he asked this action since there is a large number of Jewish teachers in the schools who observe these holidays. In most schools–even in schools where the pupils are preponderantly non-Jewish–the Jewish teachers do not show up on the Jewish High Holy Days, he explained. It is estimated that of the 40,000 teachers in the New York public school system more than 18,000 are Jews.
