“Jewies from 18 countries have already designated their representatives to attend the world Jewish conference in Geneva and were it not for the attack upon the conference by Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the American Jewish Committee, the Board of Deputies of London would have agreed to send a delegation to the conference,” Dr. Stephen S. Wise, honorary president of the American Jewish Congress, stated at a reception held on Monday evening at the Waldorf-Astoria for the American delegation.
Dr. Wise said, “I think that we ought from this time and always, to ignore attacks whatsoever their source and devote ourselves with utmost earnestness to the tasks which are before us, namely the earnest and thoughtful consideration of the problems affecting Jews of many lands, and the consideration of the question of convening a world Jewish congress.”
Dr. Wise read a communication on the world Jewish conference received from the Jewish historian, Professor Simon Dubnov, who declared: “In the present difficult situation the forthcoming conference is most assuredly necessary and I should be happy to participate.”
Addresses were also delivered by Bernard S. Deutsch, president of the Congress; Aaron Sapiro, Israel N. Thurman, Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, Robert Szold, Rabbi Ephraim Yolles of Philadelphia and Chaim Shoskin, of Poland. Mr. Shoshkin, a delegate to the conference as representative of the Polish Jewish co-operatives, was here for a visit in connection with the Chicago Exposition.
