Ehud Olmert asked Mahmoud Abbas to start negotiations toward Palestinian statehood. “Because of reality and the circumstances, we are willing to compromise to give up parts of the Land of Israel,” Olmert said in remarks addressed to the Palestinian Authority president Tuesday after Israeli election results suggested Olmert would be Israel’s next prime minister.
