Fervently Orthodox soldiers in Israel’s special haredi unit are reportedly punished for violating Jewish religious law, the Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported. The report said punishments such as cancellation of leave have been imposed for such infractions as smoking, talking on the telephone during the Sabbath and failing to wear a skullcap.
