Fire of unknown origin, starting in a cloakroom, ravaged Beth Tzedec, one of the largest synagogues in America, last night causing damage estimated at $1,000,000.
There were no evening classes last night and no injuries. Heaviest damage was caused to the ground floor and foyer corridors. Thirty-foot glass windows were smashed and a mural in the lobby suffered severe smoke damage. Rebuilding of the damaged sections of the seven-year-old structure was scheduled to begin immediately.
