German Censor Board Bans Play by Jewish Author

December 15, 1930
See Original Daily Bulletin From This Date

The play Marriage, by the well-known Jewish author, Arthur Doeblin, was prohibited today by the board of censors, which appears to be falling under the influence of the National Socialists. Their disturbances prompted the suppression of the American film. All Quiet on the Western Front.

The play itself is not objectionable, treating marriage from the moral point of view and recognizing family life. The only objection appears to be that its author is a Jew. Thomas Mann, Nobel Prize winner for literature, when informed of the ban, declared that the censors’ act “could be considered comical if it were not so shameful.”
