Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress and of the World Zionist Organization, had a one-hour meeting with Chancellor Konrad Adenauer today during which the recent outbreak of anti-Jewish excesses was discussed.

Dr. Goldmann declined to make any statement after the meeting today but was expected to have a press conference later in the week.

Members of the Social Democratic Party sharply attacked Chancellor Adenauer today for the weekend speech in which he advised Germans to give a thrashing to hoodlums caught in anti-Jewish activities. Party spokesmen said they were “surprised and concerned” over this advice and would always oppose “lunch law.”

When Minister of the Interior Gerhard Schroeder was asked about the Adenauer advice at his press conference today, be replied that he hoped it would “be interpreted in a healthy manner by all our people who have a healthy respect for the legal processes.”

Foreign Office officials explained to foreign newsmen that the Chancellor had been “speaking symbolically.”
