Former Governor Herbert H. Lehman, addressing a meeting called in connection with the 100th anniversary celebration of Temple B’rith Kodesh here, asserted last night that “it is the duty of the synagogue, as a spokesman of modern Judaism, constantly to endeavor to have the world realize that the divine purpose is to effect a solidarity in human society expressed in terms of peace and justice.”
“The social message of Judaism, not yet realized, inspires its followers today,” Gov. Lehman declared. “Yet Judaism as a religion cannot today rest content with constant reiteration of the messages of its prophets and sages. Unless the synagogue can aid a suffering world in its daily problems, giving value to its social ideals, its mission remains unfulfilled.”
