Stirred by the expressions of confidence and friendship that have come to him from all over the country, Herbert H. Lehman announced today that he could “no longer resist” the movement to draft him for a third term as Governor and that he would accept the post if re-elected.

“Regardless of personal considerations, however compelling,” he said in a statement, “I feel that I can no longer resist the pleas of my party both in the State and the nation or of those with whom I have worked in closest association for many years and with whom I have waged the fight for equal opportunity and social security.”

On May 20, Governor Lehman had announced that he would not accept renomination, expressing a desire to put down the burdens of public office and retire to private life.
