Funeral services for David N. Mosessohn, editor of The Jewish Tribune and executive chairman of the Associated Dress Industry of America, who died on Tuesday, were held yesterday in the West End Synagogue. Rabbi Nathan Stern, who officiated at the services, was assisted by Rabbis Nathan Krass, Israel Goldstein and Elias Solomon, and the Rev. Max Grauman, cantor. Many prominent New Yorkers, including non-Jews, were the honorary pallbearers at the services. Burial took place in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
TRIBUTES FROM NOTABLES
President Hoover wired from Washington the following tribute to Mr. Mosessohn: “I am shocked to learn of the death of my friend, David N. Mosessohn. His distinguished contribution to Jewish culture and his outstanding leadership in service of the noblest ethical ideals will cause him long to be remembered gratefully by his fellow-countrymen of all races and creeds.”
“He was a splendid and a remarkable man, in whom was contained to a rare degree an outstanding civic consciousness, loyalty to and love for his faith and a robust, virile Americanism,” declared Lieutenant- Governor Herbert H. Lehman in his tribute to Mr. Mosessohn, while Adolph S. Ochs, publisher of the New York Times, said:
“His place will be difficult to fill. American Israel is bowed with grief, for he was a valiant son, respected and admired and of wide influence.”
“The death of Mr. Mosessohn was a great loss to journalism and Jewry,” declared Benjamin N. Cardozo, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals. “I learned to know and to appreciate his sympathetic interest in all things fine and high.”
MACCABEAN HERO
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise said that Mr. Mosessohn had “the Jewish passion of a Maccabean, and in the Chanukah days the light of his mortal day is extinguished who fought throughout his too brief life for the cause and hopes and ideals of Israel with the unflinching courage of a Maccabean hero.”
“Every suffering that was caused to Jewry in any part of the world found a reaction in his heart,” declared Felix M Warburg, “and if his life has come to an untimely end, no doubt his self-sacrificing devotion to these problems had something to do with it.”
