As the result of legislation hostile to foreign schools in Turkey and Greece, the Jewish schools in these countries sponsored and supported by the Alliance Israelite Universelle, a French-Jewish organization that seeks to improve the conditions of the Jews of the Balkans, Asia Minor and North Africa, are gradually being eliminated. This school system played a great role in and represented an important factor for spreading the French language and culture.

According to a report from Saloniki today 1,600 Jewish pupils attending the Alliance schools there will in the future continue their studies in Greek schools as a new law forbids the children of Greek citizens to attend foreign schools. An inspector of the government department of education who made a special trip from Athens to Saloniki, wired the government asking for an immediate grant of $30,000 in order to establish five new Jewish schools. This request was made after he had conferred with leaders of the Jewish community.
