The persistent anti-Semitic campaign recently carried on by the anti-Semitic Hungarian student groups has resulted in a partial retreat by the Hungarian government from its original position of opposition to the agitation of the students.
Today the Minister of Education, Professor Balint Homan, told the deputation of Christian students, headed by the former rector of Debrecen University that:
(1) The claim of the growth of Jewish power in Hungary was exaggerated and unfounded. So far only twenty Jewish students who graduated abroad have been permitted to practice in Hungary.
(2) That the competent ministries are considering the student demands for control of immigration and the prevention of the employment of foreigners.
(3) The legal tightening of a numerus clausus against the Jews, demanded by the students, is unnecessary, since a proper application of the present laws automatically enables the enrollment of Jewish students only in proportion to the Jewish population of the country.
