Interior Minister John MacEwen today rejected a proposal for settlement of 60,000 Jewish refugees in Australia’s northern territory. Jewish Welfare Society officials conferred with the Government on possibilities of an immediate increase in the number of refugees to be admitted to Australia. The Government has already indicated that it would accept for settlement 5,000 Jewish immigrants yearly. The University Association of Adelaide dispatched a representative to Zurich, Switzerland, to arrange for immigration of domestics and persons trained in the care of children. Newspapers of all shades of opinion published editorials condemning Nazi barbarism and expressing the opinion that the pogroms had ended hopes for appeasement in Europe.
