Israel sent feelers to Damascus in recent days indicating that if Syria gives Lebanon the go-ahead to cooperate with Israel on a withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, Israel would view this as a confidence-building measure for the Israeli-Syrian peace track, according to the Israeli daily Ma’ariv. Meanwhile, the Lebanese foreign minister, Faris Bouez, was quoted as saying that the Lebanese government would assume security responsibilities for southern Lebanon after Israeli troops withdrew.
