Israel’s Chief Rabbinate assailed the country’s sole crematorium. The Jewish state’s top clerical body issued a statement this week urging burial societies to shun Alei Shalechet, a private cremation service that began operation last week, and said relatives of those whose bodies are burned are considered exempt from sitting shiva or saying Kaddish.
