Israel’s new president tried to smooth a flap that erupted over remarks he made about secular Jews in an interview with a fervently Orthodox newspaper. Moshe Katsav, who took office two weeks ago promising to promote unity, was quoted as saying that “if secularism dominated in the past hundreds of years, we would have long ago disintegrated and dispersed.”
