Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip is necessary to ensure Israel’s Jewish and democratic character, Ariel Sharon said. “I am willing to make painful compromises for peace,” the Israeli prime minister said Sunday in a speech to more than 1,000 people in New York City. “There is one thing on which we will not make any compromises — not now and not in the future — and that is our security.”
