The musical world will pay tribute to Professor Albert Einstein at a special concert in his honor next Sunday evening in Carnegie Hall. The concert, of which l Leopold Godowsky is chairman, will mark one of the most unique events in the musical season.
In addition to a long list of outstanding operatic and concert stars who will participate in the program, many notable musicians and composers will be present to join in honoring the scientists’ long devotion to the art of music. Professor Einstein, who will leave for Europe two days following the concert, will acknowledge this tribute in a farewell address to America. In that address he is expected also to bring a special message to American Jewry.
Among the distinguished artists who will appear on the program next Sunday evening at Carnegie Hall are Mary Lewis, former soprano of the Metropolitan Opera Company; Emma Redell, soprano of the erstwhile Chicago Opera; Josef and Rosina Lhevinne, pianists; Vera Kaplun Aronson, Mary Sherratt Coolidge, and Ethel Chesins, pianists; Emanuel List, of the Metropolitan Opera Company; Conrad Thibault, N. B. C. Artist; Armand Tokatyan, former tenor, Metropolitan Opera Company; Harry Kaufman, pianist; the Musical Art Quartet and the Kroll String Sextet.
Discussing Professor Einstein’s influence upon music, Mr. Godowsky said: “His ardent devotion to the art of music has been a noble inspiration to musicians everywhere. We of the musical world are proud to claim Professor Einstein as one of our most distinguished colleagues.”
LIST PROTESTS NAZISM
Emanuel List, who sang in the Staatsopera in Berlin and at Bayreuth last year, cancelled his contract this year in spite of the fact that the German government was willing to overlook his Jewishness. Although “non-Aryan,” List was one of the very few Jewish artists not expelled from Germany when the Nazis come to power. By participating in this concert, List feels that he will have an opportunity to demonstrate his protest against the Nazi intolerance against Jewish musicians in Germany.
A novel feature of the concert will be the performance by Mines, Kaplun – Aronson, Sherratt – Coolidge and Chasins of Leopold Godowsky’s contrapuntal paraphrase for von Weber’s “Invitation to the Dance” for three pianos.
