The decision of the New York State Commission against Discrimination upholding the use of the term “near Christian churches” and similar phrases in resort advertisements in the absence of independent proof of discrimination is a setback for the cause of better intergroup relations, Herman L. Weisman, chairman of the Commission on Law and Social Action of the American Jewish Congress, said today.
“The effect of the rule will be to sanction advertisements now wisely rejected by some newspapers because they facilitate discriminatory practices,” Mr. Weisman declared. He added that the American Jewish Congress “will continue to work for the elimination of all advertisements which are signals or codes that the patronage of any particular racial or religious group is unwelcome.”
