A budget of $5,000,000 to support the programs of the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith for 1953 was unanimously adopted here yesterday at the seventh annual meeting of the Joint Defense Appeal, fund-raising agency of both organizations, which are also meeting here simultaneously. Sidney R. Moyer of Youngstown was re-elected chairman of the J.D.A. national council.
At the 39th annual meeting of the Anti-Defamation League Henry E. Schultz of New York was elected to succeed retiring Justice Meier Steinbrink. In his inaugural address, Mr. Schultz declared that the Jewish people are confronted with as great a menace in Communism now as it was from Nazism during the Hitler regime. He asserted that the “fate of Jewry has been inextricably bound up with the fate of the democratic system.”
In an address to an A.D.L. luncheon at which he was given the organization’s annual America’s Democratic Legacy Award, Sen, Herbert H. Lehman of New York today warned against those who use the tactics of Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin. He asserted that many of the people accepting and endorsing McCarthyism because of its “alleged aim of fighting Communism.” are at the same time “piously” deploring the means and methods of McCarthyism.
