Superior Court Judge Harry M. Fisher was unanimously elected president of the Zionist Organization of Chicago at an all-day reorganization session at the Sherman Hotel. Judge Fisher, who played an important role in the effecting of peace at the recent Cleveland Zionist convention, succeeds Max Shulman, who has been president of the Chicago Zionists since 1921, and an active worker in the Zionist cause since 1902.
“Wisdom as well as need dictated not only that the Jews everywhere should put the upbuilding of the Jewish National Home in the foreground of their individual lives, but that they press this priority for Palestine upon the organized communal conscience,” declared Jacob de Haas, chairman of the Organization Committee of the Zionist Organization of America, who was the principal speaker at the meeting. Turning to the local problems of Zionism, Mr. de Haas urged individual effort in enlisting members, the reduction of the districts and sub-districts to natural units answering local needs, and the active participation of the members in the life of the organization, by earnest discussion of the problems at home and abroad.
Other speakers were Rabbi Solomon Goldman, H. Steinberg and Miss Sara Moskowitz, barrister of Lincoln’s Inn, London, England. An executive committee of 85 and an administrative committee of 18 members were elected by the conference. The conference presented Mr. Shulman, retiring president with a platinum watch in appreciation of his services to the Zionist cause and decided to inscribe the name of Mrs. Shulman in the Golden Book of the Jewish National Fund.
