Dr. Abraham I. Katsh, President Emeritus and Distinguished Professor of Hebraica Research at Dropsie University here, is the only scholar from the United States invited to participate in the Congress of Linguistics and Hebrew Scholarship to be held at the University of Vienna Nov, 2-5, according to the university. Other participants will be scholars from East European countries and heads of Hebrew departments in West European countries.
The Congress has been convened by the World Association for Hebrew Language and Culture (Brit Ivrit Olamit) in Jerusalem, in cooperation with the Academy of Science of Austria and the Institute for Judaic Studies at the University of Vienna.
The invitation from Prof. Arye Tartakower, chairman of the World Association, was extended to Katsh because he has been the only American scholar to ever receive official permission from the USSR government to microfilm the rare Hebrew manuscripts at libraries and museums in the Soviet Union, the university said. He has also acquired microfilm of important Hebraica material in Hungary and in Poland. The material from the USSR is now part of the Abraham I. Katsh Microfilm Collection of Rare Hebraica in the Manuscript Library at Dropsie University.
