A Chair in Developmental Biology will be established at the Weizmann Institute at Rehovoth in the name of Philip M. Klutznick, American Jewish leader, it was announced today by Abraham Feinberg, president of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute.
A sum of $250,000 to establish the Chair is being subscribed by friends of Mr. Klutznick in recognition of three decades of public service to the United States, the Jewish Community and to Israel, and to honor him on his 60th birthday. Formal presentation of the Chair will take place at a dinner in Mr. Klutznick’s honor on September 10, at the Palmer House in Chicago. Vice-President Hubert H. Humphrey will be a principal speaker. Mr. Klutznick is a member of the board of directors of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute.
The new Chair will help advance studies on the control of the processes of the growth; cell differentiation; the mechanism of antibody formation; immunology; and the relationship to cancer. First incumbent of the Philip M. Klutznick Chair in Developmental Biology will be Dr. Michael Feldman, head of the Weizmann Institute’s Department of Cell Biology, whose pioneering in this field and in cancer research have won him international scientific repute.
