Lawmakers are being asked to sign separate letters to President Bush supporting or opposing $20 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority. One letter, circulated by Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.), backs the aid, saying it would send a “critical message of American support for the emerging Palestinian leadership.” A separate letter, circulated by Reps. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) and C.L. “Butch” Otter (R-Idaho), calls the decision to send direct aid to the Palestinians “deeply disturbing.”
