Lebanon’s prime minister traveled to Washington for a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to discuss an Israeli offer to withdraw from southern Lebanon. Israel recently offered to withdraw from its security zone there in return for guarantees against cross-border attacks. Both Lebanon and Syria, the main power broker in Lebanon, have rejected the offer and call on Israel to withdraw unconditionally.
