Sir:

As chairman of the sub-committee which introduced the resolution favoring unity, adopted at the Monday, May 22nd, session of the American Jewish Congress in Washington, let me call your attention to the fact that the letter you published in yesterday’s edition of the Jewish Daily Bulletin did not carry the date on which it was sent you, namely Thursday, May 18.

Whatever may have been my opinion prior to May 22nd, regarding the form of unity, I have written and acted since then in accordance with the spirit and letter of the Congress unity resolution, the text of which, unfortunately, you did not print in full in your report of the session. It is to be hoped that the important developments tending toward unity since Monday, May 22nd, may soon be made public. May 28, 1933. Louis I. Newman.

The following is the full text of the resolution to which Rabbi Newman refers:

“The American Jewish Congress assembled on this 22nd day of May, 1933 in Washington, D. C., endorses the steps taken by its officers and Administrative committee to meet, the present emergency created by the German situation, and reaffirms its willingness to cooperate in presenting a united front in the defense of the Jewish rights.

“We are prepared to confer with all Jewish groups which desire unity of action in the defense of Jewish rights, the details of this program of unity to be developed by the conference of representatives of all groups concerned.

“We empower the officers and Administrative Committee to take such other and further steps which they may deem necessary to achieve the goal of united effort in conformity with the spirit of this resolution.”
