The first step in the organization of a Jewish employment bureau in Los Angeles was begun at a meeting of prominent Jewish men and women of this city, held at the office of the Federation of Jewish Welfare Organizations this week. Edward Bastheim, well-known jeweller and communal worker, presided.
Considerable discussion as to the methods to be used by such an employment agency was aroused, I. Irving Lipshitch, executive director of the Federation, leading the discussion. It was finally decided to establish such an agency within a very short time on a purely business basis, with a nominal charge to the employee obtaining work through the agency’s efforts.
Stress was laid on the necessity of avoiding any association between the welfare organizations and the agency. Mr. Lipshitch pointed out that workers who are sent from a welfare or charitable association to an employer are usually not given the same treatment and courtesy that is given an employee sent through a regular employment agency. On a motion of J. J. Cummins, editor of the B’nai B’rith Messenger of this city, the resolution to proceed with the employment agency was accepted.
