More than one in three army-aged youth in Israel do not do mandatory military service, a top general said. The Israel Defense Forces’ deputy chief of staff, Maj. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday that male candidates who do not serve include Arabs, fervently Orthodox yeshiva students, the medically unfit and those with criminal records. Among female candidates, 30 percent do not enlist, Ashkenazi said.
