Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has invited the Israeli bodyguards who escorted him when he attended the Jerusalem funeral of Yitzhak Rabin in Jerusalem to visit him in Egypt.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem said Mubarak had extended the invitation to the seven bodyguards from the Shin Bet VIP protection unit, in a gesture of appreciation for their work and to offer his encouragement.
A state commission of inquiry is now examining how members of the same unit who were protecting the late prime minister allowed an assassin to get within point-blank range of Rabin on Nov. 4.
Mubarak made his first visit to Jerusalem last week when he attended Rabin’s funeral.
