The National Council of Jewish Women pledged today to continue to foster the study of Judaism and the development of Jewish community life in America, In a resolution adopted at the organization’s convention, the delegates declared that “Judaism, through its teachings, has bequeathed to every Jew a rich inheritance of moral and religious values, and a strong sense of personal responsibility”

The resolution added that an understanding “of these historic principles and their modern application will preserve Jewish identity, strengthen Jewish communities and enrich the Jewish contribution to democratic life both here and abroad.”

Another resolution adopted unanimously cited the “significant contribution to democracy” that has been made by the State of Israel “by building a new life of dignity and independence for its people through a democratic government. ” The Council appealed to the United States to continue “to give economic support to Israel through loans and other measures.”

In an address to the convention delegates, Miss Hannah Stein, executive director of the Council, called on American Jewish religious and secular leaders to engage “in a free exchange of ideas” on the complex problems confronting American Jewish communities. Such an exchange of ideas implemented by a program of action, she said, can result in moving the American Jewish community from “its present thought and structure, which really belong to the 1930’s and 1940’s, to the completely different 1960’s.”
