Dr. Augusto Amaral, Brazilian delegate to President Roosevelt’s Economic Conference, discussing world conditions with a Jewish Daily Bulletin correspondent, expressed deep indignation at the Nazis’ treatment of the Jews in Germany, and predicted the early downfall of Adolf Hitler.

Dr. Amaral said, “I could scarcely believe it when I read in the Rio de Janeiro newspapers that Jewish literature was being destroyed, Jewish business houses closed and Jewish students barred from the schools in Germany. It is difficult even to surmise that a highly civilized nation such as Germany, would stoop to such mediaeval tactics. However, I am convinced that it is Adolf Hitler who is responsible, and not the German people as a whole. If Hitler continues to carry out his anti-Jewish program, he will not remain long as the leader of his adopted country. I look for Hitler’s down fall within four months.”

Asked how the Jews are regarded in Brazil, Dr. Amaral replied, “There are a great many Jews not only in Brazil but scattered throughout the South American continent. They are industrious and highly respected.”
