The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations, representing Orthodox synagogues in the United States, has been admitted to full membership in the National Community Relations Advisory Council, which coordinates the activities of Jewish groups engaged in combatting anti-Semitism in this country.
An announcement to this effect was made today by Irving Kane, NCRAC chairman. He said that the admission of the national Orthodox body is aimed at “furthering the move toward creation of an instrumentality representative of the three wings of American Judaism to carry primary responsibility for the interfaith aspects of community relations work.” Such a move was voted by the NCRAC plenary session last September.
Max J. Etra, president of the Union, said in a statement that the question of religious principles was discussed in detail with NCRAC officials and assurances were obtained that under the established policy of the NCRAC, the participation of the Union would in no way involve compromises of religious principles.
