Nearly 15,000 dunams of forests, natural and man-made, were destroyed by fire in 1983, according to the Jewish National Fund. The JNF reported that 662 fires occurred during 1983. The biggest blazes were on the slopes of the Carmel range near Haifa. In 1982 there were more fires, but only 10,000 dunams of trees were affected, the JNF said.
