New Hillel Foundation Will Be Established at University of Michigan

Steps for the establishment of a B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, were decided upon at the meeting of the Hillel Foundation Commission.

In presenting the summary of the activities of the B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation for the current year, Dr. Benjamin M. Frankel reported that the total enrollment in the three Foundations is seven hundred Jewish students. The work is done primarily through students’ organizations comprising committees on dramatics, open forums, publicity, social welfare, Menorah, publications, recreational and social activities and religious education.

In all the Foundations both Reform and Orthodox services are held, Orthodox services being held on Friday and Saturday and Reform on Sunday. The students of Wisconsin and Illinois have organized through their own initiative a Students Loan Fund, which is used for the benefit of those who require assistance to complete their education.

Simon Adler, retiring majority leader of the New York State Assembly, was tendered a dinner on Wednesday night. Governor Smith extolled the nineteen years of service of Mr. Adler, as Republican leader in the legislature. Mr. Adler retired from the legislature to become a federal judge in his home district of Rochester.

The creation of a chair in History of Religion at the Hebrew Union College, to bear the name of Dr. Kaufmann Kohler, was urged by Rabbi H. G. Enelow as a tribute to the late president of the Hebrew Union College. Dr. Enelow spoke at a memorial meeting held under the auspices of the Chicago Rabbinical Association.
