One of Russia’s chief rabbis urged authorities to set up a program to protect religious cemeteries. In a statement Monday, Berel Lazar said cemetery desecrations have become a “nationwide issue,” and called on the authorities and police to take measures that would bring to justice those responsible for last week’s desecration of a Jewish cemetery in St. Petersburg.
