During the first eight months of this year the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society assisted 13,909 immigrants to leave Germany and 18 other countries for new and permanent homes in the United States, Australia, Canada and various countries of South America, Issue L. Asofsky, executive director of HIAS, announced here today.
The United States received 2,954 of these migrants, Canada, 3,553 and Australia, to which the HIAS operated a regular plans service from Europe, received 1,192. The plans service broke a long shipping bottleneck to Australia. In South America Venezuela admitted the largest number of immigrants, 1,450, while Argentina accepted 696 and Paraguay 481.
