The Jerusalem committee of the United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine is now drafting a plan for internationalization of the Holy City which will probably be ready for submission to the Commission-sponsored “exchange of views” parley between Arabs and Jews somewhere in Switzerland, Commission spokesman Hamilton Fisher said at a press conference today.
Fisher emphasized that the proposed meeting–to whose invitation the Israeli Government will reply Tuesday–will not be a roundtable or peace conference. He pointed out that all the Arab states with the exception of Iraq agreed in principle to participate in the parley. Iraq, he said, explained she saw no-point in attending any meeting so long as the Palestine Arab refugee question remained unsettled.
Meanwhile, the first meeting of the joint Israeli-Transjordan armistice commission set up under the terms of the recently-concluded armistice agreement was held here today. The Israeli delegation to the commission includes Col. Moshe Dayan while It. Col. Sidki Jundi represents the Amman government. Procedural matters were taken up at today’s session. The next meeting was set for April 18.
It was reported here during the week-end that Arab inhabitants of the towns of Qalqilya and Tulkarm in the Arab triangle area awarded to King Abdullah are leaving because they fear being too close to the Israeli armed forces. The Transjordan authorities have warned the inhabitants of these towns that they will not be given any food or assistance if they leave their homes.
