Proceedings began in the civil lawsuit brought by activist Rabbi Avi Weiss against Washington-based Howard University and one of its former security guards. Weiss is suing Howard for violating the D.C. Human Rights Code, an anti-discrimination law. He accuses the guard of discrimination and battery. The charges date back to April 1994, when Weiss and three other Jewish activists say they were assaulted while protesting a speech at Howard by Nation of Islam representative Khalid Muhammad.
